I'm getting ready to tri

I've been pretty nervous about doing this triathlon tomorrow. In fact, I've lost a couple pounds off my 109lb frame because I eat less when I'm anxious. So to put those pounds back on I'm thinking about going on the Phelps Gold-medal diet. What do you think?

Ryan Hall Passion for the Run.

Sorry for posting two videos in a row. Real post coming soon...I signed up for a sprint triathlon this Saturday. My first in quite a while.

The way things are.

Yeah, I know it's political. Skip it if you want, I have to post it. On health care.

I placed second!

I ran a 10K last Saturday. My first 10k in forever. So I figured I'd give it a shot and give myself a "current" PR to work with, since I haven't run that distance in a race for many, many years.

It wasn't fast, (55:19), currently my tempo runs have been faster. The first half of the race was one long hill and that really slowed the pace. (I really need to get some hill work into my training. I know the Portland marathon has some hills and I currently do not run enough hills.) Also, I didn't eat anything before the race, I knew I should have by the last mile I felt like I was bonking a little bit.

When it was over, we kind of bee-lined it out of there because my son was performing at the Oregon Air Show with the Civil Air Patrol color guard. I wanted to stay around for the drawing after the race because they had some cool stuff to raffle off. But we didn't. Well, I guess we should have stuck around a few minutes -- I didn't know it, but I actually placed second in my age group, and would have gotten a medal. If I'd stayed to get it. ;)

My son said with a grin, "Well Mom, what happened to all those other trophies and medals you've won?"{wink} (Yeah, he knows they are all dusty at the bottom of a box somewhere in the attic.) I guess it was just the touching it and bringing it home to stick in a box I needed to experience...

I don't think I mentioned this before, but I've been having a lot of stiffness in my right hip joint. Sometimes it is tough just to get on my bike. However, I've noticed some improvement since I've been consistently doing the "Kettlebell swing burpee set" thing several times a week.
Coincidence? Maybe, but I really don't think so. I'm going to keep at it for now.

Other news:Hurray! Ultradad finished his first 50 mile ultra. He had me worried he wasn't going to make it the couple weeks before. If you haven't been listening, check him out at The Ultradad podcast.

Lastly, the Olympics are killing my sleep. I love the Olympics! I don't have Tivo or cable or anything exciting like that, so what I see is just whatever coverage comes on primetime tv. I don't want to miss anything, but my eyelids drift into sleep mode before the coverage is over.

Air Show

A few pictures of the air show today.
My son is the rifleman on the right in the above photo. This was their first public performance as a color guard. (Gee, and in front of 50,000 people attending the show...yikes!)

Another notes post: "Air show editon".

  • I was listening to Brett talk about the interesting subject of heat and how it affects you. I do well working out in the heat for the most part. Could it be because I wear a stocking cap while running 70% of the year that I acclimate well when it actually gets warm?
  • Time Snatchers! Be careful what kind of projects you start. (And when you start them.) I decided I needed to refinish an old metal cabinet. Getting all the old layers of paint off was not fun, and really dangerous. Those paint removers are not tame!

  • I'm going to run a 10k this Saturday, it is mostly uphill. I do not believe I have actually run a 10K race since....well, never mind...let's just say whatever I run will be called my PR because the last official time would be antiquated by now. I ran some fast ones once upon a time, but this is a new era of my life. Therefore, this will be the personal record of the new era.
  • I will rush from the 10k to the Hillsboro Air Show where my son will be in the opening ceremonies as a color guard rifleman. I will try to get some video or photos to post. He will be in the opening ceremonies all three days of the event.
  • I've been careful not to try to make any of my kids do anything just because I happened to like it --after all, it's their life and they need to find out what makes them tick. (Not just what pleases Mom and Dad.) But, (trying to control my excitement here) my 11 year old son says he wants to run cross country this fall. Woo hoo!!! I can hardly wait! Yippee! (Okay. Okay. I'll sit down now.)
  • Last note...We are starting (home) school next week!
Thanks for stopping by!

Short on time?

I've been a bit short on time lately as far as getting in longer sessions. Rather than skipping workouts I've been cross training (which I do anyway) during whatever time I can get.

I love this workout! It will kick your hiney every time--if it feels easy, you just go faster. Kettlebell swings and burpees. I got it from the Kettlebell Athletics site.

Give it a try. By the way, if you don't own a kettle bell it is possible to substitute a dumbbell. (Swing carefully.) Oh yeah--it's 10 swings, 1 burpees, 10 swings 2 burpees, 10 swings 3 burpees, (keep going).....
